Archives

During their long history, the Royal Museums of Art and History (RMAH) have formed rich archives on all dimensions of its operational activities, tasks and missions as a museum and a research institute.
On the one hand, the institutional archives shed light on the development of the museum since its creation in 1835: the expanding collections, the construction of new museum wings, its scientific and educational activities, or the exhibitions that were organised. On the other hand, there are the archives of individuals and associations containing information on curators, collectors, volunteers, and other actors who contributed to the shaping of the museum in the past.
The archival department of the RMAH is tasked with acquiring, valuing, processing, preserving, and disclosing the museum archives. Many archives are still awaiting to be treated, but we aim to make all archival records accessible by means of inventories, finding aids and other tools as soon as possible.
